What to know about Maine Coons
The Maine Coon is a large, social domestic cat breed native to Maine, where it is the official state cat. Known as "gentle giants," they are characterized by their muscular build, long, shaggy, water-resistant coat, and large, tufted paws that act like snowshoes. They are intelligent, playful, and make good family pets, but require regular grooming and a high-protein diet.

- Origin: The breed is believed to have originated in the state of Maine, possibly from matings between domestic shorthairs and longhaired cats brought by sailors.
- Decline and Revival: Their popularity declined in the early 20th century, and they were thought to be extinct by the 1950s. However, a group of dedicated breeders worked to save the breed, leading to its championship status in 1976.
- Official State Cat: The Maine Coon was named the official state cat of Maine in 1985.
