What to know about Persian cats?

The Persian is a long-haired cat breed known for its round face, large eyes, and calm, docile temperament. Originating from Persia (modern-day Iran), they require significant grooming due to their long, thick coat and are prone to certain health issues like breathing problems and eye tearing because of their flattened faces.

Appearance and temperament

  • Appearance:
Persians have a stocky, "cobby" body with short, thick legs and a plumed tail. Their most distinctive features are their large, round eyes and a round face with a short muzzle. Their long, luxurious coat comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

  • Temperament:
They are known for being sweet, gentle, and quiet. While they enjoy affection, they are also independent and will cuddle on their own terms. They are generally calm and do not require a lot of high-energy activity.

Care and health

  • Grooming:
Their long, thick coat requires daily brushing to prevent mats and tangles. Regular baths may also be necessary.

  • Eye care:
The large, round eyes are prone to tearing, which can lead to staining and skin irritation. They need to be cleaned daily with a soft, damp cloth.

  • Health concerns:
Due to their flattened faces, Persians can experience breathing difficulties, dental problems, and eye issues. They are also susceptible to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). It is important to ask breeders about health screenings for these conditions.

History

  • Origins:
The breed is ancient, with origins in Persia (modern-day Iran). They were brought to the West in the 1600s.

  • Popularity:
Persians have been popular for centuries and were even favored by Queen Victoria. They were among the first breeds registered when the Cat Fanciers Association was formed in 1906.
